Bio
Kortni Sheely was born in 1989 in Hanover,
Pennsylvania. She came to love jewelry and metalsmithing when she realized in
high school that she could save money by making her own jewelry. Creating her
own pieces also helped her stand out in her Catholic school uniform. She
followed her passion and studied fine art metals at Millersville University of
Pennsylvania graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree in 2012. While at
Millersville, she exhibited her work in the juried student show in 2011 and
2012 and her solo BFA exhibition, Notions,
in the spring of 2012.
Statement
My jewelry includes a sense of nostalgia by including
childhood crafts and needlecrafts in my inspiration- immortalizing these
objects in sterling silver. Cross-stitching was simply a hobby I picked up one
Saturday afternoon and slowly consumed my interest, time and became the focus
of my artwork. As I continued with needlecrafts, I became more interested in
the tools themselves rather than the finished product. The notions – scissors, pins,
bobbins, buttons, and pincushions, which every sewer cherishes, became
something that I wanted to bring into my metal work. Including working notions
in my jewelry, I create playful pieces to allow the wearer to advertise their
love of needlecrafts.
